In 2001, The Litchfield Writers Guild formed as part of the
“student” body in a writer’s workshop run by Jean Sands, a local writer and
journalist. Friendships formed in that crucible of learning—how to
articulate such talents as the group possessed—and remained when Jean’s
workshop ended in December 2002. In January, 2003, members of the group met
again and reformed, using the name we had devised two years before and
adding to it the casual designation of LWG, to which it has been referred
since.
In all, fourteen members and former members of the guild have stayed with
the commitment to produce our own book, a sampling of what we have
creatively wrought over these past four years.
Guild members number ten, the optimum size for a critique/support group such
as ours. We meet at the Litchfield Community Center, a beautiful, recently
built facility on Route 202. Our members come from as far away as West
Hartford on the east, New Milford on the west and Watertown to the south. We
have a member from Canada and one from Scotland. The rest of the group is
composed of local talent, which has gravitated to the LWG because of a need
to learn better how to express themselves through writing and poetry. Our
friendships have come from the crucible and our love of writing has kept the
group going with remarkably low turnover.
In this book are stories and poems, some fictitious, some true. We hope you
will enjoy every page.
About The Author
In our current membership are Barclay Johnson, a man of
great talent and stentorian voice. His defining characteristic is to teach,
and although retired, he has long established his value to the group by
helping all with the particularly difficult task of defining the use of the
English language. Another, Louis Jacaruso, has found listeners and critics
for his metaphysical spirituality. Barbara Francis tours in many countries
and her stories reflect her love of travel. Wilma Hubbard writes questioning
poetry about life. Barbara Fincken creates deeply personal poetry.
Originally from Canada, Dora Cox is a well-known artist and writer, who came
to us to learn how to write memoirs. Bob Curtis remains razor sharp in mind
even through a long-term affliction with Parkinson’s disease. He is our
tribute to the indomitable human will to keep going despite infirmity.
Author Richard Benton is caught in a desire to make fiction as believable as
if it were true. Even in his sci-fi flights of fancy, he makes his science
correct or plausible. Rob Pizzella defines much of life in rhyming verse. He
has a knack for weaving the humorous with the serious. Finally, there is
Blanche Geshwind. There is only one like Blanche and we’ve got her. A
natural storyteller, she brings the Bronx and New York City to people who
could never have experienced them in any other way.
