This book deals with only five of the many battles fought during the Pacific War, yet American casualties totaled one-third of the almost 300,000 casualties suffered during the entire four years of the conflict. These casualties were a tragic and needless sacrifice in battles that had nothing to do with gaining the ultimate victory.
Long overdue is an acknowledgement our nation owes, in shame, to those whose lives were sacrificed in battles that should not have been fought, or to those who died in battles led by incompetent commanders, or worse.
The author wrote this book to explain how these tragic events took place.
About The Author
During WWII he was Boat Group Commander for his ship, leading Higgins Boats carrying assault troops in invasions of a number of Japanese-held islands. These experiences led him to ask, even at the time, whether there were compelling reasons for each of these battles.
This book will provoke controversy because the author rejects the commonly held view that each of the many battles waged during the Pacific War was needed to defeat Japan.
Leon Cooper has had a varied work career in civilian life: inventor, with patented products being sold throughout the world, including a product that is used by all commercial airlines for testing the fire alarm systems aboard their planes; CEO of his own computer company; CFO of major corporations; now a successful writer, including co-author of an award-winning screenplay.
Reviews
"Nobody interested in the 1942-45 Pacific War should neglect Leon Cooper's book, which asks vital questions about the destructive and unended rivalry between the commands of General MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz, about lessons not learned from slaughter at Tarawa and Peleliu, about the failure of knowledge from the Manhattan Project to alter island-hopping after the Marianas Islands, and about dependence on the unreliable B-29s that could have spared one or more from the trio of Marianas, Iwo Jima and Okinawa."
---Carl Woodring, former Chairman,
Department of English, Columbia
University
"Leon Cooper's first battle did't earn the name of 'Bloody Tarawa' because things went well...a battle that would cause mothers of the fallen to demand the firing of Admiralal Nimitz, the man the held responsible for killing their sons at Tarawa...Yet Tarawa happened in November, 1943 and victory in the Pacific would be years in coming...Was there another way? Read Leon Cooper's intriguing and well-informed impressions of the Pacific War and reach your own conclusions."
---Michael Puttre, Former Editor-in-
Chief,"JED, Journal of Electronic
Defense," and producer of award-
winning documentary,"Nagasaki."
"Your narrative about 'War Plan Orange--Tarawa the Crucible" is very stimulating and thought-provoking...Bypass would have been a better choice than attack...We learned the hard way."
---Donald Allen,Author, "Tarawa--The
Aftermath."
