This textbook is designed to be a resource for counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, students, and others in the helping professions who want to expand their ability to engage clients in the exploration of emotional pain. The book was also written to equip counselors and therapists with skills to work with people of the countless so-called minority cultures who rely heavily upon a counselor’s ability to create an affective relationship that communicates a deep sense of respect, honesty, enthusiasm, and appreciation. Taking a vacation to another country or a course in multi-cultural counseling does not make a therapist an expert in another culture, but when a counselor or helping professional creates an affective therapeutic relationship, communication becomes the deepest form of caring we can create in our lifetime.

Reviews
“The heart and soul of a therapeutic alliance is the formation of a human bond of understanding between a counselor and client. The affective dimension is perhaps the key factor in establishing such a bond. Dr. Howard eloquently and practically describes how counselors may reach individuals of all cultures and backgrounds in pain, confusion, discouragement and disillusionment to help them to begin moving toward constructive action. I believe this is essential reading for all helping professions spanning not only those in training but to seasoned practitioners as well.”

“I found it to be quite informative and a good training document for aspiring counselors and therapists. In addition to presenting a sensitive and informative biographical account of Dr. Howard’s therapeutic experiences, it also presents an important focus on the role of affect in working with clients of all diverse backgrounds. This book is a must for those of us in the profession of training the next generation of therapists and I certainly will make it a requirement for my students.”

“I have never had the pleasure of being so enthralled with such a different approach to therapeutic intervention that can be effective with diverse populations. This approach can surely add long-term benefits to practitioners who implement this approach and to clients who may receive support through an understanding beyond the typical approach to therapeutic intervention.”
