Demystifying establishes a new standard for understanding addiction by expanding the disease concept to include the relationship aspect. "The pathological dependence is a pathological relationship, one in which there is a beginning, progressive emotional and mental involvement, and a synergistic interplay between dependence and denial." It's a model that accounts for both, etiology and treatment, and applies to all addictions including pornography, sex and love addictions and compulsive gambling. Demystifying Addiction is essential psycho-educational material for treatment practitioners and students of addiction.

Reviews

To Relieve the Pain, Demystifying Addiction by Daniel Linder MFT Demystifying establishes a new standard for understanding addiction by expanding the disease concept to include the relationship aspect. “The pathological dependence is a pathological relationship, one in which there is a beginning, progressive emotional and mental involvement, and a synergistic interplay between dependence and denial.” It’s a model that accounts for both, etiology and treatment, and may well apply to all addictions including compulsive gambling and porn and sex addictions. If what Linder postulates about the etiology of addiction is true; that it is based on the need to relieve pent-up pain from unmet needs sourced in one’s relationships, it’s not too great of a leap to recognize that the ability to create emotionally nourishing relationships is a primary goal in recovery. Demystifying includes a chapter about porn and sex addictions that make us think about these addictions in a way we never had before, as it becomes clear that a pathological relationship with huge damage potential exists. A chapter focusing on stigma, an integral sociological concept that has not received the attention it deserves by training and treatment professionals is included. Additionally, the chapter, Diagnosing Chemical Dependency clarifies something that has long been confusing -- the implications of distinguishing between ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’ criteria, i.e. interpreting denial for diagnostic purposes, which make earlier intervention possible. Demystifying Addiction is essential psycho-educational material for treatment practitioners and students of addiction.
