As the cover warns, there is fundamental knowledge hidden by the fig leaf cover-up: the culture-wide conspiracy of shame that makes us think we can’t tell the truth about this touchy subject.
At last! A forthright, urgently needed—and understandable—philosophy dares a heads-up uncovering of tough stuff: pedophilia, the incest-avoidance factor, age-of-consent and molestation.
This no-nonsense approach to sex education, religion and culture is progressive, edgy—and tasteful—as it contemplates the evolutionary connectedness and integrity of the whole. It regards kids of all ages (think about it) as “temporary collections of genes.”
Such evolutionary awareness generates a child-rearing philosophy based on the “law of natural consequences.” (Sometimes, parental intervention must be the natural consequence.)
The book distinguishes inner morality from outer ethics. Dysfunctional shame from functional shame. Non-judgmentalism from good judgment.
With the help of cultural mythology—from classic children’s stories and holy scriptures to current politics and entertainment—the author writes with wisdom, empathy, and grown-up humor.
About The Author
With a masters degree in psychology and a doctorate in human sexuality, Dr. Joan has lectured at several colleges and universities while being “dis-invited” from some school districts for demonstrating how a condom fits over a cucumber.
Experience as a board-certified clinical supervisor has convinced her that much adult mental/emotional tragedy could be avoided with comprehensive childhood sex education. She adds, “Many people seek therapy for psychological disorders when what they really need is moral/ethical guidance.”
A member of several sex-related professional organizations, she also presides over the Marin Philosophical Society and belongs to the American Society for Philosophy Counseling and Psychotherapy.
Also a minister/counselor (affiliated with the American Humanist Association) she offers non-religious spiritual guidance and officiates at weddings and memorials for “people who wouldn’t be caught dead in church.” Her playful humor even led to a brief stand-up career as an “Irreverent Reverend.”
More seriously reverent, she conducts worship services and directs the social justice program at her Unitarian Universalist congregation.
Reviews
“This book is “radical.” (Radical: arising from or going to a root or source.”) It’s progressive and edgy. But tasteful and kind.”
“As the cover warns, there is deep fundamental knowledge hidden behind the fig leaves. Even if you took the sex out of it, you’d still have a good read about religion, morality and social change. Particularly the crucial change: from making war to making love.”
“A desperately needed point of view! She keeps her finger on the pulse of the present, while gathering wisdom from the past, and keeping an eye on the uncertain future.”
“At last! An author who actually comes to grips with ambiguity! Nothing is always all good or all bad. Kids need to know what their options are.”
“Whatever your sexual position, if you provide guidance, or influence any child’s life, you need this thought provoking, heads-up book which picks up where the others leave off.”
“You don’t have to agree with her. But if you think about it, it might keep you from being regarded as a dinosaur.”
