He takes his readers on a journey that includes laughter, music, folklore, school days, characters and even sorrow all written in a poetic tone. Anthony provides a glossary to explain the rhythmical cadence of Caribbean language.

Reviews

Stories of human activities that endure give us all a common ground for identification; an insight into our human nature. In writing about characters of his youth, sound of mind or not,and about his joyous experiences, DeRiggs has managed to write about us all. DeRiggs writes informally. He writes in the past tense, as readers we feel we are reliving the past. Present and past are effectively utilized. In reading DeRiggs' Narratives, we feel we are there. The common llanguage or vernacular words of oral Grenadian communication are written down in a manner which carries the story telling voice. If the words are not explained in the text, DeRiggs provides a glossary. DeRiggs captures the cadence of Spice Island language. Consider the quotation from the book about bus drivers. "Some people got dey rides and got speeches from the drivers: "Man wipe yuh dam foot before yuh come in me car, nah." "Whey yuh going wid all dat mud?" Discussion could be presented on the origins of the vocabulary and culture, but let us leave that for the scholars and enjoy. Ann Elizabeth Wilder.
