Some of the worst words a parent can hear are those of “mental retardation.” How can parents adjust to this information, how will their child with mental disability affect their family, and how can they ensure good medical care and therapy? This book tells the stories of four mothers who have overcome disabilities in their child. In their own words, each mother recalls her family background and upbringing, her hopes for family and children, her fears upon recognizing abnormalities in her child, her frustrations in finding answers, and her successes in adjusting and sharing with other families. After each biography is a commentary highlighting key advice for parents and health care professionals.
