Shoestring--No Time For Dinosaurs
by John Benjamin Sciarra
Price: $12.95 128 Pages, Paperback, 5.5 x 8.5 ISBN-10: 0-9769555-0-4 ISBN-13: 978-0-9769555-0-4 Kyle age 14, his sister Teresa, age 12 and another girl, Sonja find themselves in a world that existed 65 million years ago just as the comet that caused the dinosaurs' extinction is about to hit. A bizarre device is the invention of the children’s fathers, scientists, who are unaware their children accidentally stepped into the time capsule as it was in the process of being transported. The children find a dinosaur called a Bambiraptor—a cross between a reptile and bird (it really existed!). It becomes their pet. The children narrowly escape the comet's fiery aftermath—thanks to a shoestring!

REVIEW – SHOESTRINGS – NO TIME FOR DINOSAURS
John Benjamin Sciarra, Author
Shoestrings is not your typical inquisitive kids just nosing around, getting into a little trouble book. It is a powerful, stretch your imagination, live and breathe it as you read it adventure! From the moment Kyle figured out how to get into the lab, Teresa and Sonja become real people and the reader gets caught and joins them in a stunning, awesome journey into the past!
A book on dinosaurs is not one I would ordinarily choose to read but the cover immediately got my attention and once I started reading I was hooked. Shoestrings— No Time For Dinosaurs is a marvelous book for young people and a fantastic journey into the past for readers young and old that dare to enter the dome-topped cylinder encased in glowing green fluid.
REVIEW: SHOESTRINGS—NO TIME FOR DINOSAURS BY JOHN BENJAMIN SCIARRA

Time travel has been one of human's greatest dreams. If we could invent the time machine, would we really want to use it? What if we accidentally transport ourselves into an era where we are not wanted or which is about to be destroyed? Even if we survive, would we be able to return to the present? John Sciarra asks and answers these questions in his book, Shoestrings: No time for Dinosaurs."
Kyle, his sister Teresa, and an Indian American girl Sonja, all adolescents, accidentally find themselves transported back in time to the dinosaur era, on the day when the comet is about to strike the earth and destroy the dinosaurs from the face of the earth. Would their fathers who invented the time capsule in their labs realize their children are missing? Will Kyle, Teresa, and Sonja be able to escape from the dinosaurs and the comet and live to see their parents again? More importantly, would their fathers be able to rescue the children before the comet kills them along with the dinosaurs?
Sweeping from the sterilized labs of America to a rainy, volcano spewing world inhabited by the dinosaurs, Sciarra weaves a web of adventure, suspense, confidence and innocence, that leaves you wanting for more. The book can be best described as a cross between Honey, I shrunk the Kids and Jurassic Park with a little bit of Cosmos and The Time Machine thrown in for fun.

If you thought physics and paleontology was dull, think again. The strength of the book is that it is not only a fascinating read but also manages to debunk the myth that you are cool only if you look good or get good grades in school, especially when you are a teenager. I would not be surprised if this book is made into Jurassic Park 4.

Dear Mr. Sciarra:
I recently read the first installment in your Shoestrings series of books for children and was very impressed. As an editor for Swordsmith Productions and a former middle and high school-level teacher in the Canterbury and Woodstock, CT school systems, I was struck by your ability to capture the thoughts and feelings of the young adolescent characters and make them spring to life on the printed page. You have created a wonderful adventure story for kids of all ages to enjoy. The endless possibility to explore and teach children things they might not have otherwise even considered in future installments of Shoestrings is evident.
In my opinion, the use of the time machine in your story is an excellent, highly effective tool, which will undoubtedly stimulate young readers to explore further elements of history, math, science and other subjects that they may not have been interested in before reading Shoestrings. Personally, I know of many students who will readily identify with the character of Kyle. He is quite intelligent, but under stimulated, and it is through his own self-made adventures that he learns about the world around him, the past, etc. This sends a positive message to youngsters that it is more than all right to be smart, and that enjoying learning about new things does not make one “uncool.”
I would readily recommend Shoestrings to my former colleagues at the middle school level. A book that promotes a positive message of learning and self-esteem to children at this age level is greatly needed, and has been, for a long time now. Kudos to you for being the one to write it!
I eagerly anticipate reading the next adventure with Kyle and the gang!
Sincerely,
Nina L. Grigoreas, M.A.
Editor, Swordsmith Productions
Good Morning John,
As promised I'm getting back to you with written comments.
As I said, I am not a fan of the sci-fi genre, but I did enjoy this read. I think the story holds a lot of appeal for the young reader on several points:
Kids on their own without parental supervision is a favorite kids' fantasy (until it happens); the brother-sister relationship is very believable; the switching back and forth in action just at the right moment creates suspense and a need to "read on"; dinosaurs as a topic holds real fascination for kids; and the ending holds a punch as it is unpredictable. I think you've crafted a story that will capture and hold the attention of the young reader.
Good luck with the series!
Re: the copy of Noah's Diary, it is too advanced for our students here, so I am passing it along to Fitch High School for their collection.
