For most of his life, since the age of sixteen, Harry Redding has been aware of an obligation—something that is expected of him but he cannot readily identify. Now he is seventy-nine years old and still does not know what it is that he is supposed to do—or to be. In this narrative we watch Harry as he emerges from a tumultuous and shallow-minded adolescence into adulthood, developing the character of a decent human being. Then we see him as an elderly doctor, still prodded by an undefined, but compelling, duty, still unfulfilled. Harry, now quite old, once more makes an abrupt decision to leave behind the life he has lived, just as he did when he was sixteen, to try to resolve his obligation.
The story of Harry Redding is told as a duality—of his adolescence and young adulthood, then of his late years, in which there are echoes from his youth. These echoes bring a longing for the delights of life, which have largely faded with age, but also a reprise of the sense of challenge arising from his mysterious obligation. It is a challenge that ultimately he is granted an opportunity to meet.
The novel is both earthy and spiritual, told against a background of family turmoil, of war, of reconciliation, and, finally, of grace.
