Life is good in Fort Lauderdale and especially good for Dr. Kenneth Luke Murphy who believes that "a good education" opens all doors. When Kenneth returns to Ocala to care for s ailing Father, he discovers that some doors should never be opened. Before Dying, Pop Murphy gives his son a bound box that pop calls the "Murphy Stake" containing pieces of family history, honor, and secrets, but he insists that the box remain sealed until his death. The bones in the grave start rattling early but are not revealed until Kenneth Luke completely violates every rule and tradition of his youth. When he crosses the line, Ocala demands its payment in blood. Kenneth's choices are costly. He pays compound interest for the sins of his father and grandfather that nearly take his life by the end of the novel. In a final twist, Dr. Murphy ends up bringing two families together in ways that beg a sequel.
